Christiana Cassetta Downer

Christiana Cassetta Downer (aka: Tita/Mother Downer), approximately 96 years of age, passed peacefully on Sunday, August 23, 2020 at her home in Oakland, California surrounded by various family members. Christiana was born October 28, 1924 in a small village in Jamaica called Moore Town to the late Simeon Robinson and Rebecca Valentine.

She married the late Carlton Downer in 1957 from which eight children were born from this union. She professed her life to the Lord at an early age. After the passing of her husband in 1981, she subsequently migrated to the United States in 1987 and shortly thereafter joined Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, where in which she then got baptized. She loved working in the church and cherished praising the Lord. In fact, she loved the church so much that it quickly became her second family. She loved to sing thus, she became a thriving member of the choir for many years until her health prevented her services.

Christiana loved to read her bible, praying for and with others, spending time with family, laughing and always wearing a smile. She was a loving and caring person, devoted wife, mother and friend, always thinking of others first. To know her was to love her. She was very outgoing and was never the one who wanted to stay inside the house. Oh…she loved to walk!

Christiana leaves to cherish her loving memory, her children – Sylvia, Hylton, Josephine, Juliette, Howard, Lorna and Garfield; 14 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

In tears we saw you sinking, we watched you fade away.
Our hearts were almost broken, you fought so hard to stay.
God saw the road was getting rough, the hills were hard to climb.
He gently closed your weary eyes and whispered,
“Peace be Thine.” You left us very quietly, your many thoughts unknown.
But left us many memories we are proud to own.
So treasure her Lord in Your garden of rest.
For when on this earth, she was one of the best.
